Greetings!
The MWES Military Kids Club a.k.a The Purple Up Club is an outlet that has been created for military kids to have fun, make new friends who may be having the same personal emotional challenges they could be having and aid in developing resiliency skills to become stronger in the face of potential challenges that may come their way as a military child. Particularly if the military parent is deployed or dealing with the effects of combat stress and/or injuries. Currently this club is only for grades 3rd-5th grade.
The name “Purple Up” comes from the “Purple Up!” campaign which was created by an outside organization 4 years ago called Operation Military Kids (OMK). This organization has identified the official color of the military child as purple. This color purple is to show support and thanks to military children for their strength and sacrifices. Purple was chosen because it is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is a combination of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine red and Navy blue. The “Purple Up!” campaign encourages community awareness and support of military children during the month of April. However, at Mary Williams we have decided to show support for our military children not only during the month of April, but year round.
The Purple Up! club will meet once a month in the morning from 8:00am-8:45am. Parent permission must be given for kids to be a participant. The hope is to meet on the second Friday of every month. However, please keep an eye on this site to verify future meeting dates. Parents will be responsible for bringing their child to Mary Williams ES in order to participate in the club.
If you give your child permission to participate please complete our permission slip below, and have your child return it to Ms. Brown, the school counselor, at Mary Williams. If you have questions or concerns about this initiative, please contact Ms. Brown at (703) 445-8376 or browndx@pwcs.edu
To all of our many military kids at MWES we want you to know......
we’re with you all the way!
